In spite of Overwhelming Achievement, Clair Obscur Creators Intend to Keep Studio Lean

The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't just a strong Game of the Year candidate, but also a massive sales triumph. Studio the development team and publisher their publishing partner announced that the game exceeded 5 million units sold, and that’s despite its status as a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.

The game's performance came as quite a shock for the team. “I was strongly believing that we'd create a good game that would meet some average market performance,” the COO and producer stated.

A technical director pointed out the game's Metacritic rating, rated 93 by critics, came as the most surprising moment to the team versus what we anticipated and the actual outcome of the field was. Because when it dropped the entire team was screaming and jumping. It felt absolutely wild.”

This triumph resulted in the studio creating a complimentary expansion for the game featuring fresh areas, foes, along with challenging bosses, which they said would be out sometime soon.

That said, despite the game's evolution, fans shouldn't anticipate the studio to grow. We've built a great team guided by a visionary director possessing strong ideas for this game and also for new ideas. Our goal is to maintain the human scale that led to our success then develop one big game after another,” the executive added.

The size of Sandfall sparked plenty of debate upon the title's release. A few well-known creators, including renowned designers, looked at the development group as a perfect example for a studio. While Sandfall was and is truly compact compared to its AAA counterparts, checking the title's staff list indicates many individuals worked on it; the French studio partnered with overseas animators for animation work, as an instance.

“We plan to recruit slightly more for sure if we have a future production surge in upcoming years,” the producer commented. “Yet I picture essentially a craft studio with a small number of exceptionally gifted creators that create artistic collaborations.” He noted that Sandfall’s vision as developers “aims to keep the key advantages that enabled this success originally.”

Despite being not the right time to disclose concrete plans what’s next — believe me, I attempted to learn more — they are certain their fundamental principles. “The turn-based aspect, is integral to our identity of what we built,” a developer remarked. “The timing isn't right to specify our next interests, however, it's crucial to adhere to the DNA of studio featuring rich storytelling plus innovative play that excites us.”

They noted how this game started with their director developing his passion title. It is hoped that's something will be repeated as well for future productions.”
