McLaren's Lando Norris Wins First F1 World Title in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Race Win.

With a performance full of nerveless racing, the McLaren driver has clinched his maiden F1 world title by taking a podium finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A podium was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen finished first and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Norris closed out his title with clinical focus to win the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside, almost completely off the track.

This moment was investigated by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move without being held up was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

As Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was comfortably his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
